I’m reading through the BitTorrent protocol specifications again today, and am amused to learn how a BT client registers itself as part of the file-sharing swarm through the announce URL. The announce URL is a simple HTTP GET request which is not difficult to generate if you know the torrent’s hash and how to urlencode the rest of the parameters. In fact, some torrent clients may display the request URL if you enable logging.
Now the magic question: if a malicious user were to copy this URL and embed this as 1×1 <IMG> tag in some popular forums and blogs,

This tool defies my common sense of uptime monitoring: it monitors the web sites for changes through a FireFox plugin. When the web site being monitored is back online, or its contents have changed, it will inform you. As you might have suspected, the monitoring stops when you turned out your PC or exited FireFox, so where does the uptime monitoring come into the picture ?
I believe some might find this tool useful, but unfortunately, I’m not one of these believers. In all cases, the name of the tool does not accurately define its true purpose: web site monitoring.
