Data mining "digs" into these data to "mine" small amounts of information by establishing patterns and studying the trends. Small insights from these analysis can yield big long-term gains, particularly when repeated over a period of time.

However, data mining is not just simple data analysis. It requires 1) an understanding of the industry conditions; 2) appreciation of specific factors that apply to an individual company; 3) familarity with a wide range of analytical tools; 4) the ability to present extracted information in ways that managers can understand and interpret.

There has been a significant increase in the amount of spams for this week (probably due to Christmas). Phlishing scams have also been on the rise. My thunderbird has this Mail Route Display add-on which can display the route (countries) at which the emails have been relayed through. It’s not 100% accurate due to the difficulties in pin-pointing certain IPs to countries. However, to a certain extent, it can throw up some warning signs on your emails, especially for those phlishing scams which seem like real. If you are a thunderbird user, you may want to look into adding this add-on to your extensions list.
