For anyone using the e220 or e169 modem under fedora core 9 or any of the latest linux distro's with network manager 0.7 installed, you don't need to install any other software, when you right mouse click on the network icon, you will see a icon what says Auto gsm network connection, just click on that and your connected, you also dont need to put the apn in either, it works out of the box, hope that helps

@JP:
It appears that the modem might have been detected, but it's just that you do not have permission to open for the /dev/ttyUSB0 for read/write.

Can you login as the superuser (root) user of the system, and run this command in the terminal:
$bash> chmod a+rw /dev/ttyUSB0

Then unplug and re-plugin your modem and try the vodafone software again.

Hi there!

I'm glad that I've found this site, because I've just bought Huawei E169 USB Modem from a portuguese mobile operator (Optimus) and I'm trying to get it working on Fedora 9.

After testing the modem on XP to see if it was working with no problems, I reboot the computer to run Fedora and followed all the steps to install the packages and the Vodafone software, everything went ok.

But when I load the application, this is the message error I get: "Your device has been detected but it has been impossible to connect to it. Could not open port: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/dev/ttyUSB0' ".

So, the app can't detect the modem. Do you have any idea what could be the problem? Did I've missed something? Thanks in advance!

@Chris:
Most likely, not. Most PPP connections use internal or reserved IPs. Such IPs are not accessible via the Internet.

Mike, is it possible to set up FTP or HTTP server on a PC connected via such mobile broadband mechanism. In other words, what we do at home using port-forwarding, can these be done via mobile broadband? thanks.

@Andy:
Try running "vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux-debug" in a terminal. It should output some logs for troubleshooting.
